Few Women Shine as Hollywood Sees Decline in Female Directors in 2025

Hollywood witnessed very few successful women directors in 2025, reflecting a broader decline in female-led films at the box office. Among the limited successes, Emma Tammi, who directed Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, and Nisha Ganatra, who helmed Freakier Friday, stood out as the only women directors with major box office hits this year.

However, their success came amid a worrying trend. According to a recent study, only nine of the top 100 Hollywood films in 2025 were directed by women, underscoring how rare such achievements have become. Industry experts noted that despite proven performance, women directors continue to receive fewer opportunities, especially in big-budget studio productions.

The contrast highlights that while individual women directors can deliver commercial success, systemic barriers still limit wider female representation in Hollywood’s top ranks.
