Bengaluru: In a significant recognition of Karnataka’s agricultural excellence, the Prime Minister has highlighted the export potential of three Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged products — Nanjangud Rasabale, Mysore Betel Leaf, and India Lime — drawing national attention to their exceptional quality and global appeal.
Sweetness Rooted in Soil: Nanjangud Rasabale
Grown primarily along the banks of the Kapila river near Nanjangud in Mysuru district, Nanjangud Rasabale is celebrated for its distinct aroma, natural sweetness and soft texture. What sets this banana apart is the unique alluvial soil composition and climatic conditions of the region, which impart a rich flavour unmatched by similar varieties grown elsewhere. Its thin peel, golden pulp and high nutritional value make it a favourite in both domestic and premium fruit markets.
Fragrance and Flavour: Mysore Betel Leaf
The Mysore Betel Leaf, cultivated in traditional “pandal” systems, is prized for its glossy appearance, tenderness and subtle pungency. Known for its longer shelf life and uniform size, this variety stands out for its balanced flavour — neither too spicy nor too mild — making it highly sought after for ceremonial, medicinal and export purposes. Farmers maintain meticulous cultivation practices, preserving age-old methods that enhance both quality and sustainability.
Zest of Karnataka: India Lime
India Lime from Karnataka, often referred to for its thin skin and abundant juice content, is known for its refreshing aroma and high citric acid concentration. The fruit’s bright green colour, uniform round shape and extended freshness period make it ideal for culinary, beverage and processing industries. Its superior juiciness and tangy flavour give it a competitive edge in international markets.
Boost to Farmers and Exports
With GI tagging ensuring authenticity and protecting regional identity, the Prime Minister’s mention is expected to further enhance global visibility and export demand. Agricultural experts note that such recognition not only safeguards traditional farming practices but also empowers local farmers with better pricing and branding opportunities.
As Karnataka continues to position itself as a hub of high-quality horticultural produce, these GI-certified products stand as shining examples of how geography, tradition and quality combine to create globally competitive agricultural treasures.
