Indian cinema today mourns the passing of one of its most iconic and graceful actresses — B. Saroja Devi. She breathed her last at her Malleswaram residence in Bengaluru at the age of 87, due to age-related ailments. With her demise, an unforgettable chapter in the golden era of Indian cinema has come to a close.

A Dazzling Career That Transcended Languages and Eras
Born on January 7, 1938, B. Saroja Devi began her illustrious journey in cinema at just 17 with the Kannada film Mahakavi Kalidasa. She quickly rose to prominence and became a household name across South India, working in over 200 films across Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi. Known as Abhinaya Saraswathi in Kannada and Kannadathu Paingili in Tamil, she embodied grace, strength, and stardom like few others could.
Her on-screen pairings with stalwarts like M.G. Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan, N. T. Rama Rao, Dr. Rajkumar, and Dilip Kumar are still fondly remembered by generations of cinephiles. Between 1955 and 1984, she starred as the lead heroine in an astounding 161 consecutive films — a record that stands tall even today.
Saroja Devi’s acting repertoire ranged from mythological epics to romantic dramas and social tales. She effortlessly balanced glamour with depth, earning both commercial success and critical acclaim. Her contributions were recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan, as well as the Kalaimamani and an honorary doctorate.
Even in her later years, she remained active in public life, mentoring artists and serving on film juries. Her final screen appearance was a graceful cameo in the 2019 Kannada film Natasaarvabhowma alongside Puneeth Rajkumar.
