The Indian film industry mourns the loss of a creative titan with the passing of Sreenivasan Malayalam filmmaker, actor, and master screenwriter. The legendary artist died today at Tripunithura Taluk Hospital after a prolonged period of treatment for multiple ailments, leaving behind an indelible legacy spanning over four decades. He is survived by his wife, Vimala, and his acclaimed filmmaker sons, Vineeth Sreenivasan and Dhyan Sreenivasan.

Sreenivasan Malayalam filmmaker was celebrated as the empathetic voice of the common man, uniquely blending incisive social satire with relatable humour. Born on April 6, 1956, in Padiyam, Kannur, his early life was steeped in political activism and theatre, influences that would later define his cinematic voice. He honed his craft at the Adayar Film Institute, graduating in 1977 alongside contemporaries like Rajinikanth.

While he debuted as an actor in 1977, it was as a screenwriter that Sreenivasan Malayalam filmmaker truly revolutionized Malayalam cinema. His prolific collaboration with director Sathyan Anthikad produced a golden era of middle-class classics, including NadodikkattuSandeshamTP Balagopalan MA, and Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam. His sharp, witty dialogues and poignant storytelling in films like Gandhinagar Second Street and Vellanakalude Nadu captured the socio-economic anxieties and aspirations of a generation.

Beyond writing, Sreenivasan Malayalam filmmaker also directed and starred in numerous successful films, leaving a distinct mark in each role. His contributions were recognized with numerous accolades, including National Film Awards, Kerala State Film Awards, and Filmfare Awards.
