The uncertainty surrounding the theatrical release of Jana Nayagan, starring Vijay, continues after the Supreme Court of India on Thursday declined to grant relief to the film’s makers.
The apex court dismissed a petition filed by KVN Productions LLP seeking immediate clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), effectively ruling out the film’s release shortly.
The petition was moved after the Madras High Court’s division bench stayed an earlier order passed by a single judge, which had directed the CBFC to certify the film without delay. The producers had argued that the stay order jeopardised their plans for a festive release, citing financial losses and the expectations of Vijay’s fan base during the Pongal season, traditionally considered a high-revenue window for Tamil cinema.
Jana Nayagan, which was supposed to release on January 9, has remained embroiled in certification-related issues, prompting the makers to approach the courts for relief. The latest legal hurdle arose when objections were raised during the re-certification process, leading to delays at the CBFC level and subsequent litigation.
Refusing to interfere at this stage, the Supreme Court observed that it was “not inclined to entertain the plea” and noted that the matter is already scheduled to be heard by the division bench on January 20. The judges added that the high court may endeavour to dispose of the appeal on that date.
Until a final decision is delivered, the fate of the re-release of Jana Nayagan remains uncertain, leaving exhibitors and fans awaiting clarity on whether the film will return to theatres in the near future.
