Veteran Sandalwood comedian M. S. Umesh, one of Kannada cinema’s most cherished comedic icons, passed away early Sunday morning, November 30, 2025, at Kidwai Hospital in Bengaluru.
The 80-year-old actor was admitted after suffering a fall at home that led to leg and hip injuries. During surgery, doctors discovered he was also battling liver cancer, complicating his recovery. Despite continuous treatment, Umesh breathed his last on Sunday.
A Legendary Journey Spanning Six Decades
Born on April 22, 1945, in Mysuru, Umesh began acting as a child artist in Kannada theatre and went on to build an illustrious career across five decades. He is remembered for his impeccable comic timing, unforgettable expressions, and iconic dialogues such as:
- “Ayyayyo ivru nanna apaartha maadkondbittralla…”
- “Helkollona andre nanna hendthi koooda oorallilve…”
He trained under some of the biggest legends in Kannada theatre, including the Gubbi Veeranna troupe, where his role as Prahlada received praise from literary giant Masti Venkatesha Iyengar.
