Manipur’s President’s Rule Revoked, Yumnam Khemchand Singh Sworn in as Chief Minister

After nearly a year under central administration, President’s Rule in Manipur has officially been lifted, marking a return to elected governance in the northeastern state. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs issued a proclamation on 4 February 2026, revoking the earlier order imposed in February 2025 under Article 356 of the Constitution.

Hours after the revocation took effect, Yumnam Khemchand Singh was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Manipur at a ceremony held at the Lok Bhavan in Imphal, with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla administering the oath of office.

Singh, a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the newly elected leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) legislature party, takes charge at a critical juncture, as the state seeks to consolidate peace and stability after a prolonged period of political uncertainty.

In a notable effort to foster inclusivity, two deputies — Nemcha Kipgen representing the Kuki-Zo community and Losii Dikho from the Naga community — were also sworn in as Deputy Chief Ministers.

President’s Rule was initially imposed on 13 February 2025 following the resignation of then-Chief Minister N Biren Singh amid ongoing ethnic violence in the state.

With the installation of a popular government, Manipur now embarks on a fresh chapter of democratic governance, with hopes of renewed focus on development, peace and administrative normalcy.
