Beyond Coding Craze: Can Karnataka’s Core Engineering Courses Rise Again?

The question of a Karnataka core engineering revival is gaining traction as state institutions and industries push back against the overwhelming student shift towards Computer Science. Core branches like Mechanical, Civil, Electrical (EEE), and Electronics are now at the center of strategic reforms aimed at boosting their relevance through updated curricula and direct industry alignment.

Driven by the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 framework, the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) and private colleges are overhauling syllabi to include modules on electric vehicles, smart infrastructure, renewable energy systems, and advanced manufacturing. This Karnataka core engineering revival effort focuses on mandatory internships, skill-based workshops, and establishing Centers of Excellence in partnership with major players in sectors like defence and sustainable energy.

While placement rates and modernized teaching methods remain a challenge, especially beyond premier colleges, experts argue that the tangible growth in core sector jobs could be the key driver for the Karnataka core engineering revival. If these educational reforms successfully translate into strong career outcomes, the state’s traditional engineering strengths may once again attract student interest and secure their future in a diversified industrial market.
