Congress’ Poor Performance in Bihar May Help Siddaramaiah Secure Full Five-Year Term in Karnataka

The Congress’s disappointing performance in the Bihar Assembly elections has unexpectedly worked in favour of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, strengthening his position at a time when speculation over a leadership change had begun to intensify.

A stronger showing in Bihar would have bolstered the Congress high command, giving it the authority and confidence to push for internal restructuring in Karnataka — including the possibility of replacing Siddaramaiah with Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. Instead, the setback has weakened the central leadership’s influence, making any such intervention far more challenging.

For months, rumours of a mid-term leadership switch had swirled within Karnataka’s political circles. Party insiders suggested that a section of the high command was considering a transition that would elevate Shivakumar to the top post. However, the numbers on the ground tell a different story.

According to senior party sources, Siddaramaiah commands the support of over 100 MLAs, while only a limited group is firmly aligned with Shivakumar. Any attempt to unseat the Chief Minister without overwhelming support could risk internal fractures, potentially destabilising the government.

With the Bihar defeat dominating national-level discussions, the Congress leadership is now focused on damage control and organisational assessment at the central level — leaving little room for major political experiments in Karnataka.

For Siddaramaiah, this shift has brought unexpected political breathing space. The weakened high command, coupled with his strong legislative backing, means he is now better positioned to complete his full five-year term as Chief Minister.

As Karnataka prepares for crucial civic and local body elections, the party appears keen to project stability — something Siddaramaiah’s continued leadership currently guarantees.
