Budget 2026: Middle Class Hopes for Relief as Sitharaman Eyes Fine-Tuning, Not Fireworks

As Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman prepares to present the Union Budget 2026–27, India’s middle class is pinning its hopes on measured tax relief amid rising inflation, EMIs and healthcare costs. With last year’s income-tax overhaul still fresh, major structural changes appear unlikely.

Instead, Budget 2026 is expected to focus on targeted tweaks — a possible hike in the standard deduction, higher relief on health insurance premiums, and modest incentives for long-term investors. First-time homebuyers may also see limited support through housing-linked tax benefits.

Economists say any concessions will be calibrated, as the government balances middle-class expectations with fiscal discipline and infrastructure spending.

Overall, the budget is likely to offer incremental comfort rather than headline-grabbing giveaways — a cautious step to ease pressure on salaried households without derailing the fiscal roadmap.
