UGC Flags Fake Universities in Karnataka, Warns Students Against Invalid Degrees

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a fresh warning identifying certain institutions in Karnataka as “fake universities” operating without legal recognition under the UGC Act, 1956.

According to the regulatory body, these institutions are not authorised to award degrees, and any qualifications obtained from them will be considered invalid for higher education, government employment, or professional purposes.

Among the institutions flagged are Sarva Bharatiya Shiksha Peeth, located in Tumkur, and Badaganvi Sarkar World Open University Education Society, based in Gokak. The UGC has clarified that these entities are not recognised universities and are functioning in violation of established norms.

The Commission has urged students and parents to exercise caution and verify the recognition status of institutions through the official UGC website before seeking admission. Officials stressed that enrolling in unrecognised institutions could jeopardise academic and career prospects.

The latest alert forms part of the UGC’s ongoing efforts to curb fraudulent educational practices and safeguard the interests of students across the country.
