The Karnataka government is weighing a proposal to prohibit mobile phone use among school students, citing growing concerns over excessive screen time and its impact on learning and well-being.
Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar said the state is actively evaluating a policy framework that could restrict or ban the use of mobile phones on school premises. The move, he noted, aims to improve classroom focus, discipline, and students’ overall academic engagement.
Education stakeholders, however, have called for a balanced and consultative approach. While many parents and teachers acknowledge the distractions posed by smartphones, some educators argue that digital devices can serve as effective learning tools when used responsibly.
School management representatives have suggested that instead of a blanket ban, regulated usage guidelines and digital literacy programs may offer a more sustainable solution.
The government is expected to hold discussions with education experts and stakeholders before taking a final decision, as the debate continues over how best to balance technology and traditional learning in Karnataka’s classrooms.
