In a major step towards aligning school education with real-world requirements, the Karnataka government has established Skill Labs in schools for students of Classes IX to XII, offering structured, hands-on learning environments that bridge the gap between theory and practice.
Introduced as part of efforts to integrate skill education with the regular curriculum, these labs allow students to work with tools and equipment in workshop-like settings while strictly following prescribed safety protocols. The initiative is aimed at strengthening experiential learning and helping students apply classroom concepts to practical situations.
The Skill Labs cover a range of domains, including basic engineering skills, electronics, healthcare assistance, design, and other industry-relevant areas. Through guided activities, students gain exposure to problem-solving, teamwork, and technical processes that are increasingly important in higher education and the job market.
Education officials say the programme is designed not only to enhance learning outcomes but also to help students understand the relevance of skills at an early stage. “By combining academic knowledge with practical application, students are better prepared to explore future academic, vocational, and skill-based career pathways,” an official said.
Teachers have welcomed the initiative, noting that students show greater engagement and confidence when concepts are reinforced through hands-on activities. Students, too, have expressed enthusiasm, describing the labs as spaces where learning becomes interactive and meaningful.
With Skill Labs now operational in several schools across the state, Karnataka is positioning itself at the forefront of school-level skill education, in line with national education reforms that emphasise industry relevance, safety awareness, and holistic learning.
