Karnataka has marked a major technological milestone with the installation of India’s first commercial quantum computer at the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Dharwad. The initiative positions the state at the forefront of advanced computing and emerging technologies in the country.
The project is the result of collaboration between the Karnataka government, academic institutions, and industry partners, aimed at accelerating research, innovation, and real-world applications of quantum computing. The system is expected to support cutting-edge work in areas such as cryptography, materials science, artificial intelligence, and complex data analysis.
Officials said the facility will serve as a national resource for researchers, startups, and enterprises, enabling experimentation and pilot projects in quantum technologies. It is also expected to strengthen skill development by providing students and scientists access to next-generation computing infrastructure.
With this move, Karnataka reinforces its reputation as a leading technology hub and signals its ambition to play a key role in India’s quantum mission. The installation at IIIT-Dharwad is seen as a step toward building a strong quantum ecosystem that can contribute to national innovation, strategic capabilities, and future economic growth.
