Centre Ration Commission Hike ₹27 Per Quintal: Government Revises Uniform Rate for All Cereals

Centre ration commission hike ₹27 per quintal

Centre ration commission hike ₹27 per quintal became official on Tuesday, with the Union Government announcing a uniform revision of the commission paid to fair price shop societies for distributing ration grains. Union Food and Civil Supplies Minister Pralhad Joshi said all cereals wheat, rice, jowar, ragi and maize—will now carry a standard commission of ₹27 per quintal.

The revision comes following recommendations by a committee constituted by the Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD). The panel, chaired by the Executive Director (Finance) of the Food Corporation of India and comprising two state food secretaries, reviewed existing rates and suggested rationalising the commission structure. The key recommendation was to align the rates for maize and ragi with wheat.

Previously, the commission was ₹11.75 per quintal for maize and ₹15 for jowar and ragi, creating disparities across different cereals. With the new uniform rate, societies handling food grains under Central schemes including PMGKAY, PM Poshan and WBNP will now receive significantly enhanced compensation.

Calling it a major reform for grassroots distribution systems, Minister Joshi said the decision would “boost grain procurement in states, empower local societies, and benefit farmers.” He added that the revision strengthens the Centre’s Shree Anna Yojana, which aims to promote millet cultivation and widespread consumption.

Joshi credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for approving the long-awaited revision, stating that the uniform commission will improve the efficiency of the Public Distribution System (PDS) and ensure economic sustainability for fair price shop societies across the country.
